Views on Perception
For years, Marieke van Diemen has been photographing museum windows, in search of autonomous image in this natural habitat of perception.
Her photographs capture projections and reflections that unnoticeably emerge on the glass, a screen, or a window reflected in a painting or display case.
Her work encourages a more conscious way of seeing. While most visitors pass by these subtle visual phenomena unnoticed, she captures what happens at the intersection of transparency and illusion.
Museum windows also mark a transition between the world of imagination within the museum and the reality outside. Van Diemen views reflection and projection not only as optical phenomena but as fundamental visual aspects of perception that shape the way we experience reality.
Ten of these photographs have been integrated into the Next Generation Double Decker (DDNG) trains of the Dutch Railways (NS), which will travel across the country from 2029 onward.
