“U zult begrijpen dat…”
“You will surely understand…”
at Arti et Amicitiae, the oldest Arts Club in Amsterdam (1839)
The exhibition “You will surely understand…” presents the first outcomes of an ongoing research, conducted by historians of the University of Amsterdam (UVA), into the history of Arti during the Second World War and the heartless attitude towards their Jewish artist members. Documents and Arti’s WW II archive are present to look into.
In memoriam
A restaged exhibition
Part of the exhibition “You will surely understand…” contains a restaged exhibition “In Memoriam”, the board of Arti initialized in 1947, to commemorate their murdered Jewish members, plus two artist members who died in Indonesia. This exhibition was criticized strongly at the time, for good reasons. “Too late’ was one of the headlines in the press in 1947.
No photos or descriptions exist of what the “In Memoriam” exhibition looked like at the time, just a sober catalogue with the artists’ names, titles and lenders. Wooden panelling was the only known detail of the exhibition spaces. Van Diemen used this as a graphic theme to create the different spaces, functions and atmospheres.
Nearly half of the works of the “In Memoriam” exhibition were traced down and generously given on loan by family relatives of the artists and Dutch museums.
The titles in the catalogue often appeared incorrect, the captions in the exhibition of the found works show both the titles: from the catalogue of 1947 and the actual titles.
Absent works are represented by captions in which a number of yet unknown facts are mentioned, such as the current location. The captions also emphasize the physical absence of the works that took part in 1947.

The exhibition caused strong reactions. During the opening, the chairman of Arti apologized on behalf of the board for the heartless attitude and actions during the war towards their Jewish members, eighty years later.
